Orangeburg, S.C.: Howard's Destiny Howell knocked down a shot from beyond the arc that sparked a 9-0 fourth-quarter run to complete the comeback and defeat of the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina St. 67-59, Monday night in S.H.M. Memorial Gym.
The Bison [10-7 and 4-1 MEAC] came out strong taking an early 11-7 lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter when the Bulldogs [3-16 and 3-2 MEAC] closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to capture a 15-11 lead.
SCSU built an 11 point lead with 2:12 left before intermission. Howard closed the half on a 5-0 run, trailing 31-25.
S.C. State Nadia Reese gave the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead [14] of the game with 2:09 left in the third quarter. Then, the Bison caught fire, ending the quarter 5-0 run cutting the lead, 51-42.
Howard continued their momentum into the fourth quarter recording a 13-4 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, cemented by a Nyla Cooper three-point shot cutting the lead, 57-56. The Bison and Bulldogs traded basket when Destiny Howell knocked down her fourth three-pointer to capture a 61-59 lead with 2:10 left in regulation. Howard held South Carolina State scoreless the rest of the way and knocked down six consecutive free-throw to close out the game and escape with a 67-59 victory.
Destiny Howell paced the Bison, recording 16 points (6-of-14 from the floor], Anzhane' Hutton knocked in seven free throws, also joined Howell in double figures recording 13 points, 12 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season, and three blocks. Brooklynn Fort-Davis recorded 12 rebounds, ten defensive, and nine points.
The Bison returns to the safe confines of Burr Gynmansium to open their conference home-slate versus the Univesity of Maryland Eastern Shore Eagles Saturday, Feb. 5, for a 2 pm tipoff.
