WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University Bison slow start to begin the third quarter proved to be costly as the Bison fell to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Eagles 66-59, Saturday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference [MEAC] action, snapping the Bison three-game win streak.Â

Howard falls to 10-8, and 4-2 MEAC.Â

After a back-and-forth affair, the Bison went into halftime down 30-28. However, the Hawks came out of intermission on a mission, opening the third quarter on a 23-4 run, expanding the lead, 53-32 with 3:08 left in the quarter. Despite struggling from the floor, the Bison connected from the charity stripe ending the quarter on a 9-1 to cut the lead 54-41.Â

The Bison crawled back to a 63-55 deficit with 36-seconds left on the clock after a pair of Kaniyah Harris free throws. Howard closed the game outscoring UMES 5-3, but the Hawks prevailed, taking a 66-59 win over the Bison.Â

The Bison struggled from the floor, shooting 28.3 percent [15-of-53] and 5-of-20 from beyond the arc. UMES held a small lead 39-37 rebound lead.Â

Howard's Destiny Howell's 19 points paced the short-handed Bison squad. In addition, Kaniyah Harris recorded a game-high ten rebounds.

The Bison will play a make-up game on Thursday, Feb. 10, versus MEAC leading Norfolk State for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The game was originally slated for Jan. 15 was postponed due to Covid-19 protocol in the Spartans program.Â
