RICHMOND, VA -- The Howard University Bison fell to the #22 Richmond Spiders, 38-14, to open the 2021 season, Saturday afternoon in Robins Stadium.
To start the season, Howard falls to 0-1, and #22 Richmond improves to 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPEN
>> Howard won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half.
>> #22 Richmond took the opening drive 12 plays for 65 yards, capped off by an Aaron Dykes one-yard rushing touchdown to take the early lead, 7-0.
>> Howard went three-and-out in their opening drive.
>> The Bison defense held the Spiders to a three-and-out on the ensuing drive.
>> Howard opened their second drive with a 26-yard rush by Hunter Jarrett. However, the momentum was short-lived; a sack and a penalty stunted the drive.
>> Richmond extended their lead 13-7 (missed FG) on another Aaron Dykes one-yard touchdown capping off a 10-play 78-yard drive with 15-seconds left in the first quarter.
>> The Bison came alive in the second quarter, hitting on some big plays. Howard answered Richmond touchdown, opening the second quarter with an eight-play 86-yard drive capped off by a 24-yard rushing touchdown by Ian Wheeler to cut the lead, 13-7.
>> The Spiders scored ten consecutive points to take a 23-7 advantage.
>> Howard Quinton Williams connected on a career-long 64-yard pass to Christion Carter, his first touchdown as a Bison to close the gap 23-14 with 3:04 left in the first half.
>> After intermission, the #22 Richmond Spiders came alive on both sides of the ball, stifling Howard's offense forcing a punt and a fumble in back-to-back drives. The Spiders' offense took advantage, connecting on two passing touchdowns to put the game out of reach, extending the lead 38-14.
BY THE NUMBERS
>> Quinton Williams passed for 226 yards and a touchdown.
>> Jarett Hunter recorded a game-high 93 yards on 12 carries, averaging 7.8 yards a carry. Hunter racked up 128 all-purpose yards.
>> Quinton Williams targeted ten receivers connecting with nine.
>> Ray Williams and Sadiq Salawu lead the defense with seven total tackles.
>> Howard recorded six passes that gained 15+ yards, and five rushed for 10+ yards.
>> Howard struggled on third downs (1-of-11)
