COLLEGE PARK, Md. (September 11, 2021) – Howard University football team fell on the road against Maryland (UMD), 0-62, at the Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
With the setback, HU drops to 0-2 overall while the Terps improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Offensively, the Bison were unable to get into a rhythm. Howard was held to 146 total yards and eight first downs.
Freshman running back
Robert Morgan (Lousia, Va.) came alive late for the Bison, finishing with 32 rushing yards on four carries.
Maryland took a 14-0 advantage into the second period where they scored 24 points in the quarter, capped off by a 38-yard field goal from Joseph Petrino to end the half, 38-0.
Howard drove into Maryland's territory on their first drive after intermission but was forced to punt.
UMD kept the pressure on, tallying 24 more points in the second half.
Rookie wideout
Richie Ilarraza (Tampa, Fla.) recorded a team-high four receptions in the loss.
Defensively, D.C. native senior
Aaron Walker racked up a game-high eight total tackles (seven solo) while fellow classmates
Rodney Dennard (Braddock, Pa.) and second-year Bison
Kenny Gallop (Portsmouth, Va.) added seven total tackles apiece in a losing effort.
Taulia Tagovailoa led the way for Maryland, throwing for 274 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
On Sept. 18, Howard will stay in the district to host the first-ever Truth & Service Classic versus rival Hampton. Kickoff is slated for noon at Audi Field.
