WASHINGTON (September 26, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team earned its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over Maryland Eastern Shore in straight sets at The Burr (25-20, 25-19, 25-14).
With the win, HU (4-10, 1-1 MEAC) snapped the Hawks' four-match winning streak.
Junior
Alex Smith (New Orleans) led the way with a match-high 10 kills while producing a .318 hitting percentage.
Maryland Eastern Shore's Marina Cruz delivered a kill and tied the contest at 11 apiece midway through the opening set, but HU went on a 6-2 run to create separation and win game one, 25-20.
Both squads were deadlocked at 18 late in game two until Howard finished the set on a 7-1 spurt to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
HU trailed early in set three, 5-6, but the Bison scored five consecutive points, highlighted by a pair of kills from newcomer
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas), and never looked back, downing the Hawks in game three, 25-14.
Woodard ended the afternoon with nine digs and eight kills while middle blockers
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) and
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) had seven kills each in the win.
Cruz led the Hawks (6-7, 1-1 MEAC) with a team-leading six kills in the loss.
On Oct. 1, HU hosts Norfolk State inside Burr Gymnasium. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
