WASHINGTON (September 19, 2021) – Howard University women's soccer team dropped its inaugural Northeast Conference (NEC) bout at Merrimack (MC), 3-1.
With the setback, HU falls to 1-3 (0-1 NEC) while the Warriors (1-5-2, 1-0 NEC) grabbed their first win of the season.
Moments into the contest, Merrimack's Ella Cormier found the back of the net and put the Warriors ahead, 1-0.
Midway through the first half, sophomore midfielder
Nyla Allen (Elmont, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the year off an assist by senior defender
Mikayla Johnson (Waldorf, Md.) and tied the match before halftime, 1-1.
After intermission, Merrimack regained the upper hand, thanks to an unassisted goal from Sydney Haskin, 2-1.
With less than 10 minutes left in regulation, MC's Abigail Cieri added an insurance goal to down the Bison, 3-1.
Forwards
Melea Earley (Whittier, Calif.) and
Kenya Saunders (Ontario, Canada) each took three shots apiece while graduate
Alayah Hightower (Mitchellville, Md.) produced a match-best seven saves in a losing effort.
Thursday (Sept. 23), HU returns to Greene Stadium to face Bryant. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
