WASHINGTON (August 28, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team took down their D.C. combatants, the Georgetown Hoyas, in four sets (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17) at Burr Gymnasium.
With the victory, the Lady Bison improve to 2-0 early in the season as the Hoyas fall to 0- 2.
Sophomore
Jennifer Bolden (Los Angeles) and freshman
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) both led the way Saturday with 14 kills apiece while producing .333 and .286 hitting percentages, respectively.
In the opening set, Howard gave themselves an early one-game lead with a comfortable 25-18 set victory.
Georgetown took advantage of sloppy plays and miscommunication by the Bison to steal game two, 25-23.
Georgetown took the momentum from their last game to jump out to a 6-1 set lead. They stretched the lead to 10 until the Bison came storming back to claim game three, 25-20, and retook the match lead, 2-1.
Howard and Georgetown went back-and-forth in the fourth set, but the Bison pulled away to defeat the Hoyas in the deciding game, 25-17.
Senior
Busisiwe Banda (Cedar Park, Texas) had a match-high six serve aces while junior
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) finished with 39 assists and seven digs in the win.
Defensively, freshman
Taylor Johnson (South Fulton, Ga.) one again led the Bison with a team-high 17 digs. Sophomore
Amari Patterson (Waukegan, Ill.) added 16 digs and fellow classmate
Kendall Smith (Glenview, Ill.) flirted with a double-double, tallying 11 digs and eight kills.
For Georgetown, senior Makana Meyer shined with a double-double (11 digs & 11 kills) and three serve aces.
Sunday (Aug. 28), Howard takes a visit to Virginia to take on the George Mason Patriots at EagleBank Stadium. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
