WASHINGTON (August 27, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team knocked off crosstown rival George Washington (GW) in straight sets (25-23, 28-26, 25-18) at Burr Gymnasium.
With the victory, HU improved to 1-0 on the young season while the Colonials dropped to 0-1 overall.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jennifer Bolden (Los Angeles) led the way, with a team-high 11 kills while producing a .333 hitting percentage.
In the opening set, both squads went back-and-forth until Howard pulled away late to take game one, 25-23.
GW held the advantage late into set two, but the Bison rallied and took a commanding 2-0 lead going into the game three, 28-26.
Both clubs were deadlocked at 12 in set three until the Bison scored five consecutive points to down George Washington in straight sets, 25-18.
Junior
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) and newcomer
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) each finished with nine kills while freshman
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) flirted with a double-double, tallying 11 digs and eight kills in the win.
Defensively, rookie
Taylor Johnson (South Fulton, Ga.) had a team-best 11 digs in the victory.
For GW, Salem Yohannes recorded a match-high 13 kills in the loss.
Saturday (Aug. 28), Howard meets Georgetown inside The Burr. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
