WASHINGTON (June 10, 2021) – For two years (1997 & 1998),
Lauren Pruitt was scouted by Howard University before being offered an athletic scholarship to play women's soccer.
Choosing to accept an academic scholarship instead, Pruitt enrolled at HU and graduated in 2002 Magna Cum Laude with a BBA in International Business and concentration in Computer Based Information Systems.
While at Howard, Pruitt was a dual-sport student-athlete, lettering four years in soccer and three years in lacrosse. In all four years, she was named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Academic Team.
After her first year in soccer, Pruitt was named to the Big South All-Tournament Team. Her next three seasons, she was named co-captain.
Although the program was only in the Big South Conference for two years, Pruitt still holds the conference record for
Saves per Game. She also holds the school record for
Saves per Game and
Most Saves in a Game.
Joining the lacrosse team her sophomore year, Pruitt made a name for herself across two sports. During the 1999-2000 academic year, she became the first sophomore in Howard University history to be selected as the Women's Player of the Year.
Post-Howard, Pruitt attended law school at Georgetown University Law Center. Graduating in 2005, she passed the Maryland Bar and was sworn into the Maryland Bar Association.
While waiting for the bar exam results, she tried out and made the D.C. Divas, a professional women's football team. She played one season, in which the undefeated Divas won the National Women's Football Association (NWFA) Championship and she was named Offensive Rookie of the Year.
During her first 10 years after law school, Pruitt was an adjunct professor, teaching Criminal Justice and Business Administration degree programs at a small college in Virginia while working in the corporate law sector.
Currently, she is a staff attorney and pro bono coordinator at the non-profit legal services organization, FreeState Justice in Baltimore.
