WASHINGTON (June 1, 2021) – Howard University media, journalism and film major rising senior
Monét Bowen continued the 2020-21 Senior Spotlight series with a graduate edition, featuring local native bowler
Carolyn Williams (Glen Burnie, Md.).
Q: What is your favorite part about bowling?
A: My favorite part about bowling is the family atmosphere that I've created because this sport connects you to so many people that become more than competitors or teammates, they become family.
Q: How did you get started in bowling?
A: My entire family are bowlers, so I was born into this (lol). Bowling is all I've ever known and I've been in love with the sport since I can even remember.
Q: What kept you motivated?
A: God kept me motivated because I was serving a purpose much bigger than myself and fulfilling a part of the plan that He has for my life.
Also, I had an amazing family and supportive teammates, which made things that much sweeter.
Q: If you were not competing in bowling, what other sport would you do?
A: I really don't think I would play any other sport because bowling has my heart (lol).
Q: Who is your favorite athlete and why?
A: My favorite athlete would have to be my friend, Nate, because he inspires me.
He competes in track as a hurdler and his love for God, along with work ethic and dedication pushes me to be better. He is well on his way to becoming an Olympian, I'm just glad to watch and be part of his journey.
It's important for us to shout out the athletes around us, just as much as the superstars because we're out here putting in the work too.
Q: What's your favorite memory at Howard?
A: Oh, my favorite memory is definitely Howard Plaza Towers East 240 (lol).
Q: Plans after graduation?
A: I'm returning in a coaching capacity to help the team win a championship.
My final season (2019-20), we missed our opportunity to compete for a MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Championship due to COVID-19; thus, I felt like we were cheated.
I want to help these women reach their full potential and bring home a championship!
Q: What or who will you miss at Howard?
A: I will miss spending time with my teammates, coaches, Attorney Minor, the ilab, and surprisingly, the van rides (lol).
Q: What advice would you give future Bison?
A: My advice for future Bison is to embrace every moment, even thru the tough times. Howard prepares and molds you into the future leaders of tomorrow, so soak it all in and enjoy the ride.
Q: Who would you like to thank?
A: First and foremost, I have to give thanks to God because none of this would've been possible without His love and guidance.
Also, I want to thank my mom and family for their constant support and prayers.
Thank you to coach
Ron Davis (Howard women's bowling head coach) for believing and taking a chance on me. Additionally, all my teammates for having faith in me to be their captain.
My good sister, Mya, for her love and support in and out of the classroom, along with the entire Legal Communications department for developing me into a fierce Howard woman.
Last, but not lease,
Derek Bryant (Howard Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations & Sports Information) for helping myself and our bowling program receive more awareness and support.
