LANDOVER, Pa. (March 25, 2021) – Howard University men's tennis team opened its 2021 campaign with a 1-6 loss against Mount St. Mary's (MSM) at the York Adams Tennis Community Association Complex in Landover, Pa.
Second-year Bison
Romani Mayers (Bridgetown, Barbados) led the young squad, grabbing his first collegiate singles victory over The Mount's Jarrett Karnibad in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
"I was impressed with Romani's ability to really concentrate in today's singles win," said Howard Associate Head Coach
Breaunna Addison. "He was relentless in his focus to get the job done."
Senior
Roger Lyn (Kingston, Jamaica) served as the team's No. 1 singles player where he battled, but fell to Mount St. Mary's' Jackson Wood in consecutive sets (3-6, 4-6).
Newcomer
Pierce Westbrook (New Orleans) saw action in his first collegiate match, dropping a hard fought bout to MSM's Evan Hine (1-6, 6-7).
"I was particularly proud of the way Pierce, Gabe, and Justin competed today in their first dual and doubles matches as a Bison," Addison stated. "They really exemplified the 'Howard Hustle' culture we are building, and I am looking forward to seeing them continue to develop."
Fellow classmates
Justin Cadeau (West Orange, N.J.) and
Gabe Knowles (Wind Gap, Pa.) teamed up in doubles competition, defeating The Mount's Christos Dagklis and Marcel Cronin, 6-1.
"Knowles' and Cadeau's doubles win was very impressive," said Howard Director of Tennis
Nicholas Askew. "Doubles is a huge part of college tennis and their performance even as freshmen signified their arrival."
On April 2, the Bison start league play versus Norfolk State. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
