WASHINGTON, D.C. - Howard's
Destiny Howell made a layup with three seconds left to push the Bison past the Hofstra University Pride 64-62 in overtime Saturday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium.
Howard improves to 4-4 on the early season, and the Pride falls to 3-3.
Hofstra struck first, scoring on a driving layup two minutes into the contest. Howard's defense went into shut down mode, completing handcuffing the Pride offense and sparked a 15-0 Bison run over five minutes.
Gia Thorpe led the attack on both ends, recording a steal and scoring six points. The Bison shot 6-of-10 in that span and only committed one turnover. The Howard defense held Hofstra to 0-for-6 from the floor and six turnovers.
Howard outscored Hofstra 28-15 in the first half. The Bison held the Pride to 18 percent [5-of-28] shooting from the floor.
The Bison simmered in the second half, while the Pride became aggressive, as they outscored Howard 22-16 to cut Howard lead, 44-37 going into the fourth quarter.
Hofstra opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run, taking a 47-44 lead with 6:34 left in regulation.
The Bison regained the lead on a
Kaniyah Harris layup with less than six minutes to go in regulations. Howard added two more points on an
Anzhane' Hutton layup.
Hofstra went on a 5-0 run to take a 52-51 lead. Both squads would trade baskets the rest of the way, with
Krislyn Marsh with three seconds remaining to put the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Bison and the Pride traded baskets, with neither squad extending the lead; Hofstra tied the game with 33 seconds left. After a Howard timeout with 28 seconds left,
Destiny Howell sank a layup with less than five seconds left. Hofstra had one more opportunity and fell short of the rim as the Bison held on for a 64-62 victory.
Howell has scored the go-ahead basket in back-to-back games, and her 17 points led the Bison offensive attack.
Iyanna Warren's 10 points joined Howell in double-figures and dished out a season-high eight assists.
Anzhane' Hutton returned to the lineup after missing three games was one point shy of a double-double recorded nine points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals off the bench.
Hofstra had two players record double-doubles; Jaylen Hines led the attack for the Pride, recording a double-double, a game-high 19 points, and 13 rebounds, while JaKayla Brown recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bison will be back in action on Dec. 12 versus D.C. foe George Washington at the Charles E. Smith Center on ESPN+ for a 2 pm tipoff.
