WASHINGTON (December 4, 2021) – Howard University men's basketball team rolled past crosstown rival American (AU), 90-56, inside Burr Gymnasium.
With the win, HU (5-3) snapped its brief two-game slide while picking up its sixth victory over the Eagles in program history.
Overall, the Bison shot over 55-percent (38-of-69) from the floor. Four Bison reached double figures in scoring, led by redshirt sophomore
Steve Settle, III (Glenarden, Md.) with 19 points, along with seven boards, four assists and a pair of steals.
HU opened the contest on a 9-0 run, capped off by a dunk from graduate
Randall Brumant (Houston).
AU fought back and cut the deficit to five, thanks to a layup from Matt Rogers, 16-11, but the Bison regained the momentum and never looked back.
With a minute remaining, Settle made a layup and gave the Bison their biggest lead of the contest, 43-20, but a layup from American's Stacy Beckton, Jr. put HU ahead 43-22 at halftime.
After intermission, the Eagles went on an 8-4 spurt to cut the margin to 17 points, 47-30, but the Bison refused to give AU any chance of a comeback.
Howard clamped down on the defensive end, scoring 21 points off turnovers, while holding the Eagles to only 40-percent shooting (23-of-57).
HU outscored American, 43-26, in the final 15 minutes and secured its fifth win of the season.
Howard outrebounded the Eagles, 38-26, and produced 22 second chance points.
Brumant tallied 16 points and went a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. Fellow graduate
Tai Bibbs (Chicago) netted 14 points while reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week
Elijah Hawkins (Washington) chipped in 11 points in the win.
For AU, Rogers led all scorers with 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting in the loss.
HU begins a seven-game road swing, starting Dec. 15 against crosstown foe Georgetown inside Capital One Arena. Tipoff at 6:30 p.m. on FS1.
