WASHINGTON (November 7, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team extended its win streak after downing South Carolina State (SCSU) in four sets (25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20) at Burr Gymnasium.
With the victory, HU moved to 14-11 (11-2 MEAC) on the season while increasing its winning streak to eight.
Before the contest, the program recognized its four seniors for their hard work and dedication to Howard Athletics:
Nina Askew (Fairfax, Va.);
Busisiwe Banda (Cedar Park, Texas);
Milexa Cardona (Kissimmee, Fla.) and
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas).
All four Bison started today's match and made big contributions in the victory, led by Askew with a match-high 10 total blocks (five solo), six kills and three digs.
SCSU held a 17-15 advantage in the opening set after a kill from Maria Julia Vedovatto, but the Bison responded with six unanswered and took a 21-17 lead late in game one. South Carolina State fought back, but Askew ended set one with a game-winning kill to take an early 1-0 match lead.
Howard led from start-to-finish in game two with a dominant performance, eclipsing a .346 hitting percentage in the set and taking a 2-0 match lead.
The scrappy Lady Bulldogs refused to go away, going back-and-forth with HU in game three. Williams delivered back-to-back kills and gave the Bison a 21-19 lead late in the set, but SCSU closed out the game on a 6-2 spurt to win, 23-25, and cut the match deficit, 2-1.
In set four, South Carolina State took an early lead, 8-4, but HU rallied and regain control of the match after going on a 12-4 run, 16-12. SCSU pulled within two late, 21-19, but Howard finished the match on a 4-1 spurt to win the set, 25-20, and match, 3-1.
Newcomer
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) led the Bison with nine kills and six digs while sister
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) added seven kills, four digs and three service aces.
Williams posted seven kills and three blocks while Cardona chipped in 22 assists, five digs and three service aces.
For SCSU (0-22, 0-13 MEAC), Vedovatto fell just shy of a double-double (14 kills and nine digs).
On Nov. 14, the Bison meet Big 12 opponent West Virginia at The Burr. Match time is set for 6 p.m. Two days later (Nov. 16), HU wraps up the regular season at Norfolk State. First serve at 2 p.m.
