Volleyball Takes Down NCCU In Four

Bison extend win streak

WASHINGTON (November 5, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team defeated the North Carolina Central (N.C. Central) Eagles in four sets, 25-16, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, at The Burr.

With the win, Howard extends its win streak to seven and climbs to 13-11, 10-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) standings.

Freshman Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) led the Bison with 15 kills and six digs while fellow classmate Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) added 14 kills and four service aces.

In set one, the Bison got off to a very fast start, leading the Eagles 11-1. With Awojobi's eight kills, HU was able to hold off N.C. Central's efforts by claiming set one, 25-16.

Going into set two, the Eagles started off very strong and the Bison lost a lot of momentum and trailed throughout. Despite efforts from rookie Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) recording nine kills and seven digs, N.C. Central claimed the second set, 25-21.

Bouncing back in set three, HU started off on a high note with a kill from C. Woodard; however, N.C. Central found some momentum and kept the Bison on their toes at 15-13. A push from senior leader Milexa Cardona (Kissimmee, Fla.) extended the lead after a pair of aces and then a kill from sophomore Jennifer Bolden (Los Angeles) secured set three for the Bison, 25-17.

In the final set, Cardona struck first with back-to back aces and Howard took an early 6-2 lead. HU quickly started to close out the match and cruised to 13-8. N.C. Central started a comeback; however, a service ace from C. Woodard gave the Bison set point and a kill from Awojobi helped the Bison claim the set, 25-22, and match, 3-1.

Overall, HU finished with a .267 hitting percentage in the victory.

Ammaarah Williams led the Eagles (8-13, 7-5 MEAC) with 10 kills, four digs, and two solo blocks.

On November 7, the Bison will face MEAC opponent South Carolina State at home in The Burr for Senior Day. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
