Women's Basketball Returns to Burr Gymnasium for Home Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University women's basketball team returns to Burr Gymnasium for the first time this season, to open the month of December at home versus Patriot League foe Loyola University Greyhounds on Wed., Dec. 1 in Burr Gymnasium for a 7 pm tipoff.

Game Notes

  • Wednesday matchup is the 9th game in the series. The series is tied at 4-4.  
  • The Bison defeated the Greyhounds 75-69 Nov. 20, 2019, in Baltimore, MD. 
  • Head Coach Ty Grace is 1-0 versus Loyola. 
  • The last Greyhound win was in 2013. 
  • Howard looks to keep streaking. The Bison won back-to-back games for the first time this season after defeating Mount St. Mary's 56-49. 
  • Krislyn Marsh [13], Gia Thorpe [11] was one of four Bison to score double-figures in the 2019 matchup.
  • Loyola is 0-3 in its three previous games at Burr Gymnasium, including a 40-37 setback during its last trip on Nov. 28, 2012. The Greyhounds' last win over Howard came on Nov. 20, 2013 (72-62). 

About the Bison

  •  The 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Champions fell in the finals of the 2021 conference tournament. However, the Bison took the league by storm last season. Despite the pandemic, Howard went 10-2 in conference play and 15-4, with non-conference wins versus LaSalle, George Washington, Mt. Saint Mary's, and Richmond. 
  • The Bison were selected No. 1 in the MEAC Preseason Poll.
  • Three Bison was named the Preseason All-MEAC Team, Anzhane' HuttonKaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren.
  • Howard head coach Ty Grace enters her seventh season at the helm, named 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year. 
  • The Bison only lost one starter from last season's team. 
  • Howard posted the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history last season. In addition, the Bison's defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6). Howard's 28.9 defensive rebounds ranked 30th in the NCAA led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton. Hutton was also named to the All-MEAC second team, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive team. 

Last Time Out: Howard 52 Towson 96

Howard University women's basketball team fell to the hot shooting Tigers of Towson University 96-52 on Saturday afternoon in SECU Arena to close out the month of November. 

Howard fell to 2-4, Towson improved to 5-1. 

The Bison came strong out of the gate, recording a 6-2 run in the first three minutes stapled by a Krislyn Marsh[Houston, TX] jumper. The Tigers used a 6-0 run on three-straight layups to take a 6-8 lead with 5:47 remaining in the first quarter. Towson closed out the first quarter on a 12-5 run, when Marsh scored on a driving layup to close the gap, 20-13 as time expired. 

Towson opened the second quarter on a 15-0 run, extending the lead to 35-13 with 5:43 left in the second quarter. Howard's Nyla Cooper [Fayetteville, NC] pause the bleeding, recording another three-pointer. After a made layup by Towson, Cooper knocked in another three-point shot to cut the lead, 40-19. The Tigers added two made baskets when Iyanna Warren [Accokeek, MD] made a mid-range jumper as time expired in the first half. The Bison went into intermission trailing 44-21. 

Towson continued the momentum into the second half, cruising to a 96-52 victory. 

About the Greyhounds

Loyola women's basketball heads back to the nation's capital for a second-straight Wednesday as the Greyhounds face Howard to wrap up a stretch of three consecutive road games.

Loyola is searching for its first road victory since a 50-44 triumph over Navy on Feb. 1, 2020. 

Loyola has used the same starting lineup in each of the first six games - Taleah DixonCharia RobertsBri RozziLaura Salmerón, and Lex Therien - and those five have combined for 19 double-digit scoring performances.
