WASHINGTON (October 31, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team continued its winning ways after taking down Coppin State (CSU) in four sets (28-30, 25-19, 25-17, 25-23) at Burr Gymnasium.
With the victory, HU moved over .500 (12-11) for the first time since Aug. 29 (2-1) while extending its winning streak to six.
Junior
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) led the Bison attack, finishing with 16 kills, five total blocks and three digs.
Newcomer
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) delivered a kill and gave HU set-point in game one, 24-21, but the Eagles rallied to score three straight points to extend the game. Both squads went back-and-forth until CSU registered consecutive points to win set one, 28-30.
Midway through game two, but both clubs were deadlocked at 12 apiece until HU recorded four straight points to regain the momentum and tie the match at 1-1.
Howard led start-to-finish in the crucial third set, scoring the first five points and taking a 2-1 match lead into game four.
In set four, CSU fought back and tied the game at 19 after back-to-back kills from Paola Caten. HU regained the upper hand and closed the match scoring five kills to secure its sixth consecutive win.
Junior
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) and rookie
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) each notched a double-double while freshman
Dami Awojobi (Hempstead, N.Y.) added a career-high 12 kills in the win.
Senior
Milexa Cardona (Kissimmee, Fla.) produced a match-high 30 assists and junior
Essence Bell (Ocala, Fla.) posted 20 digs.
CSU (13-10, 7-4 MEAC) saw its three-match winning streak come to a halt. Caten (17 kills & 14 digs) and Miajavon Coleman (16 kills & 12 digs) tallied double-doubles in the loss.
On Nov. 5, Howard continues its home stand against North Carolina Central. Match time at 6 p.m. Two days later (Nov. 7), the Bison host South Carolina State for Senior Day. First serve at 3 p.m.
