WASHINGTON (October 29, 2021) – Howard University women's volleyball team claimed yet another three-set victory, defeating the Morgan State (MSU) Lady Bears inside Burr Gymnasium (25-14, 25-17, 25-16).
With the win, HU moved to .500 (11-11, 8-2 MEAC) while extending its winning streak to five.
Newcomer
Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) led the way with a match-high 11 kills, followed by second-year Bison
Jennifer Bolden (Los Angeles) adding 10 kills in the victory.
The Bison started off the match incredibly strong after a thrilling opening-match kill from Woodard. HU took an advantageous 5-2 early lead in game one. Midway through the set, rookie
Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) had back-to-back service aces to help the Bison claim game one, 25-14.
In set two, the Bison were able to recover after a shaky start to claim the set. Woodard's ace grounded the Bison after trailing early, 8-5.
From then, Howard was on cruise control and exposed Morgan State's loss of momentum with consecutive kills from Woodard and back-to-back service aces from senior leader
Milexa Cardona (Kissimmee, Fla.). HU won game two, 25-17, and took a commanding 2-0 match lead.
With a couple of shifty plays from Cardona, the Bison took an early 6-2 lead in set three. Although the Bears tried to find some momentum, another service ace from Howard extended the lead 16-8 deep in the set. A match-winning kill from Bolden solidified the fifth consecutive win for HU.
Overall, HU finished with a .393 hitting percentage while tallying a match-high 11 aces in the victory.
Mackenzie Jefferson led the Bears (4-20, 2-8 MEAC) with 13 assists, two kills and a pair of digs.
