WASHINGTON (September 10, 2020) – Joe Major was a four-year member of the Howard University Men's Tennis Team (1983-87), including his final three season under HU Athletics Hall of Famer
Larry Strickland.
In his senior campaign (1987), Major guided the club to its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title under Strickland while garnering all-conference honors in the process.
That same year, Major, a member of Howard's Army ROTC, was a commissioned officer and graduated with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.
After graduation, Major spent time in the army and then began his career in the health and fitness field. He was an area director for the Fitness Company and World Gym where he oversaw health clubs in Washington, Miami, and Buffalo.
Major briefly left the health and fitness field to work in television as a sportscaster in Maryland and Buffalo, New York. In Buffalo, he was the weekend sports anchor for the ABC affiliate WKBW-TV.
Currently, he is the executive director of the Sports Venue Foundation in Hartford, Vermont.
Major has also ventured into politics, winning a seat on the select board in Hartford. He can be found on the board of the Northern Stage Theater and on Vermont governor Phil Scott's Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities.
