WASHINGTON (March 5, 2020) – Guards
Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) and
Ayonna Williams (Washington) guided Howard University women's basketball team over Delaware State (DSU), 76-71, inside Burr Gymnasium on Senior Night. With the win, HU finished the regular season 15-14 (7-9 MEAC).
Both Bison ended Thursday night with 25 point apiece.
DSU held a five-point advantage in the opening period after a jumper from Melissa Sam, 11-16, but the Bison battled back with 10-4 run to close the quarter and take the lead, 21-20.
From that point on, Howard took control and kept the Lady Hornets at bay.
HU kept the pressure on, extending their lead to double-digits nearly midway through the third after second-year guard
Gia Thorpe (Pittsburgh) connected on a jumper, 45-35.
Delaware State continued to fight back despite battling a double-digit deficit throughout the second half. DSU outscored HU in the fourth, 24-18, but their comeback bid would fell short, 76-71.
Freshman
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (Chicago) notched her second career double-double, producing 11 points and 11 boards in the victory.
Five Lady Hornets reached double figures, led by Sam and Janasia Law each recording 13 points in the loss.
