WASHINGTON (February 3, 2020) – Howard University women's basketball team took down Coppin State (CSU), 64-52, inside Burr Gymnasium. With the win, HU secured the season sweep over CSU.
Second-year guard
Gia Thorpe (Pittsburgh) had a career night for the Bison, producing 18 points, eight boards and a pair of steals in the victory.
Coppin State (0-22, 0-9 MEAC) grabbed the upper hand after one, 11-19, but HU opened the second on an 8-0 run and tied the contest, 19-19.
From that point on, Howard locked down defensively and closed the quarter on a 16-9 spurt to take a seven-point halftime advantage, 35-28.
CSU outscored HU in the third, 14-16, and cut the contest to one-possession moments into the fourth, 49-46, but Howard clamped down on the defensive end again.
HU scored 10 unanswered and put the game out-of-reach after holding the Eagles under 19-percent (3-of-16) in the fourth.
Before tonight's matchup, senior guard
Ayonna Williams (Washington) was honored for joining the 1,000-point club. The D.C. product recorded 13 points, nine rebounds, seven dimes and three steals in the win.
Sophomore forward
Krislyn Marsh (Duncanville, Texas) added 11 points, seven boards and a career-high four rejections.
For CSU, they were held under 30-percent (18-of-61) shooting while losing the rebounding battle, 51-37. Despite the outcome, senior Chance Graham notched a double-double in the loss.
HU (13-9, 5-4 MEAC) begins its five-game road swing in the Sunshine State Saturday (Feb. 8) against Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 10). Saturday's game-time is slated for 2 p.m. while Monday's clash starts 5:30 p.m.
