Softball Comebacks Fall Short at the Campbell Invitational

Bison drop two against St. Francis (Pa.) and Bucknell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (February 14, 2020) – Howard University softball team opened the weekend with two tough losses at the Campbell Invitational against St. Francis (Pa.), 6-10, and Bucknell (BU), 4-5.

HU had their best scoring output in game one, producing six runs on 13 hits. Sophomores Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) led the way, each going 3-of-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Howard scored a run in each of the first four innings, thanks to RBI-singles from Navarro, sophomore Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.) and freshmen Luz Aguilasocho (Grand Terrace, Calif.) and Te'La Beard (Bakersfield, Calif.), 4-0.

Top five, St. Francis (SFU) answered with a seven-run inning and took the lead after five innings of play, 4-7.

SFU scored an unearned run in the six, 4-8, but the Bison responded with two RBI-singles by Dennis and fellow classmate Sienna Herrera (Corona, Calif.) and sliced the margin down to two, 6-8.

St. Francis put the contest-of-reach with a pair of insurance runs in the seven, 6-10.

In the nightcap, Dennis had another outstanding performance to guide HU. The California native went 2-of-4 with three RBIs and two doubles.

Third-year outfielder Trinity Gibbs (Kissimmee, Fla.) got Howard on the board with an RBI-single, bringing home Navarro, 1-0.

Bucknell took the lead on two unearned runs in the top half of the second, 1-2, but Dennis responded with a two-run RBI double to right center and put HU back ahead after two, 3-2.

BU scored three times in the third and fourth to take a 5-3 advantage after four innings.

Howard cut the deficit to one, thanks to Dennis delivering an RBI-double down the right field line, 4-5, but the comeback would fall short.

Saturday (Feb. 15), the Bison square off against St. Francis in a rematch at 3 p.m.
