Men's Basketball Falls Short in Second Half Comeback

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Five Bison scored in double-figures for the first time this season in a comeback bid that fell short 89-83 Saturday night versus Morgan State University Bears in Burr Gymnasium.

Morgan State opened this evening game honoring the late Kobe Bryant and the eight victims who tragically lost their lives in Southern California last week by holding the ball, Howard followed suit.

Howard fell behind early, succumbing to Morgan State 13-5 run over four minutes. 

The Bison answered back with a 12-4 run to tie the score at 17 over the next four minutes led by Khalil Robinson.

Morgan St. traded long shots before reeling off seven straight points to take a 27-20 lead, with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Howard's Wayne Bristol Jr. long ball sparked a 12-2 run cemented by a pair of Charles Williams free-throw to take a 32-29 lead with four minutes remaining in the first half. 

The Bears stunned the Bison knocking down a shot from beyond the arc to take a 43-41 lead into halftime. 

Morgan St. carried the momentum into the second half recording a 21-7 run, extending the lead 64-48 with 11 minutes left in regulations.

The Bison trimmed the lead to 79-75, with 2:11 left, using a 27-15 run, that saw the starting five contributing to the run. 

The Bears held off the Bison charge, knocking down 8-of-9 free throw in a 10-8 run to escape with an 89-83 season sweep. 

Nate Garvey recorded 19 points for the Bison, Wayne Bristol Jr. added 17 points. Zion Cousins added 15 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks. Williams knocked down 15 points to inch closer to the MEAC career scoring record.

Howard shot 52 percent (26-of-51) from the floor and a season-high 12-of-24 (50 percent) from beyond the arc. 

UP NEXT:

Howard will be back in action Monday, to face Beltway foe versus Coppin State, tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. before setting off on a five-game conference road swing beginning in Tallahassee, Florida to face the Rattlers of Florida A&M.
