NORFOLK, Va. (December 29, 2020) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed its women's basketball weekly honors where Howard University senior guard
Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) and freshman forward
Kaiya Creek (Seat Pleasant, Md.) received recognition for their performances against Atlantic 10 foe Richmond (UR). The announcement came Tuesday morning.
Thornton took home her second MEAC Player of the Week award this season after pouring in a season-best 29 points against the Spiders (Dec. 22). The New Jersey native helped HU secure their third win over an Atlantic 10 opponent this year, going a perfect 10-of-10 at the foul line while connecting on five long balls from downtown. Currently, she leads the league in scoring (17.3 ppg) and free throw percentage (91-percent).
In her first collegiate start, Creek grabbed her second MEAC Rookie of the Week honor by filling the stat sheet. The Maryland product had nine points, six boards, two blocks, a steal and an assist in the victory over UR. This season, she ranks among the conference leaders in scoring (10
th/13.2 ppg) and free throw percentage (7
th/80-percent) and blocks (t-6
th/1.8 bpg).
Second-year forward
Brooklynn Fort-Davis (Chicago) received honorable mention after posting 11 points and six boards versus Richmond.
Coppin State's Rebecca Wilson claimed MEAC Defensive Player of the Week.
HU returns to action after the holiday break for league play. Howard opens the year in Baltimore to face Morgan State (Jan. 2-3). Both days are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
