Men's Basketball Opens Conference Play at Maryland Eastern Shore

Washington, D.C. - On the heels of his first non-conference season as the Howard University men's basketball head coach Kenny Blakeney, the HU Bison commence their road to the 2020 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament with league foe Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, Jan. 4 in the Hytche Athletic Center at 4 p.m. 


The Bison ended December with a record of 2-3, defeating Hampton (Dec. 5 | 94-91) and Regent (Dec. 18 | 105-47).


During their last contest against UPenn on Monday, Dec. 30. Howard made a final push in the middle of the second quarter down 53-33. 
Nate Garvey (Nanuet, N.Y.) got the run started with a lay-up, then forced a turnover that was later converted to a long-range jumper by Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.) to cut the lead, 38-53 with 11-minutes left in regulation. Garvey and Foster connected on a pair of jumpers from beyond the arc to bring the game to within nine with 9-minutes left. After a Penn timeout, the Quakers went on a 19-7 run in five minutes, connecting on five three-pointers to put the game out of reach.

  • Charles "CJ" Williams (Richmond, Va.) continues to score at a rapid pace, averaging 18.4 points a game this season, and eclipsed 2,000 career points versus Harvard. 
  • Howard won their first game versus Hampton breaking a ten-game losing streak with the Pirates on Thursday, Dec. 5 in Hampton, Va.

  • The HU November road swing began Nov. 9 in Washington, D.C., at George Washington and concluded on Nov. 26 in Washington, D.C., at American University.
  • Broken Record: Williams broke Howard record for the most career points (1,933) formerly held by James Daniel against Mount St. Mary's Nov. 30. 
  • Howard was picked to finish sixth in the 11-team MEAC for the 2019-20 season, according to a poll of the leagues head coaches and sports information directors during the pre-season.

  • The Howard University men's basketball could not overcome the University of Pennsylvania's (UPenn) hot perimeter shooting, falling to the Quakers 81-62 in the final game of 2019.
  • UPenn connected on 14 three-point shots (one shy of Penn school record), shooting 35 percent from long range to keep Howard from gaining true momentum.
