WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University Bison dropped a heartbreaker 95-101 in overtime, in front of a packed house Monday night in Burr Gymnasium.
Charles Williams paced all scorers with a game 34 points, three shies from his career-high 37 points versus Savannah State (1/28/17) his rookie season.
Zion Cousins had a career night, recording 14 rebounds and 21 points all career highs for his fourth double-double of the season. Wayne Bristol Jr. (10) and
Kyle Foster (10) also scored in double-figures for the Bison.
Howard's
Khalil Robinson started the night with a long ball to take an early lead, 3-0. The Bulldogs captured the lead sinking a 3-pointer of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Undeterred
Charles Williams knocked one in from beyond the arc to recapture the lead, 7-5.
Williams extended the lead to six (13-7) with 14:47 left connecting from the wing. Howard would continue the attack going up 15-10 on a Williams' dunk with 13:35 left on the clock.
The momentum suddenly swung to South Carolina State as they pieced together a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, to take a 20-15 lead with 10:24 left to intermission. Foster stopped the bleeding with a massive dunk to cut the lead 20-17.
Both squads battled to a 23-23 stalemate with 8:43 remaining on the clock and continued to halftime going into the break up 43-40. Williams, Cousins, and Foster combined for 36 points in the first half. Cousins was one rebound shy of a first-half double-double.
Howard tied the score three times in the second half before South Carolina St. slowly pushed a 79-69 lead with 4 minutes left connecting on a long ball from the top of the key.
The Bison went on a 15-5 run over the final four minutes cemented by Wayne Bristol Jr game-tying free throw with 21 seconds left. The Bulldogs could not capitalize on their last-second shot taking an 84-84 tie into overtime.
SCSU opened the overtime period connecting from the top of the key to take 86-84 lead with 4:37 left in regulation. HU took the lead 89-88with three minutes left when the Bulldogs went on a 12-7 to escape with a 101-95 victory.
