LONGWOOD, Va. (September 2, 2019) – Howard University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season at Longwood (LU), 2-0, despite solid play throughout.
Although the Lancers outshot HU, 12-9, Howard was the aggressor in the first 45 minutes of play, taking eight shots compared to Longwood's five.
"Despite the result, I thought we played very well overall," said Howard women's soccer head coach
Brent Leiba. "Certainly, [this is] a building block as we will learn from our mistakes and continue to improve. It's an exciting group and we look forward to our growth as a program."
At the 21-minute mark, LU's Danielle Toone threaded a pass between two Bison and found teammate Emilie Kupsov for the match's first score, 1-0.
After intermission, Howard was held to only one shot while Longwood had seven opportunities.
LU's Madison Lockamy delivered a cross through the box to Kennedy Culbreath for an insurance goal, 2-0.
Sophomore midfielders
Thalia Boucher (Toronto, Canada) and
Victoria Thornton (Plainfield, Ill.) combined for five shot attempts.
Senior goalkeeper
Alayah Hightower (Largo, Md.) had five saves in the loss.
Howard begins a three-match homestand inside Greene Stadium, starting Friday (Sept. 6) against Robert Morris. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
