WASHINGTON (August 23, 2019) – Howard University Women's Soccer team opened its 2019 campaign with an overtime victory over Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, at Greene Stadium. With the win, HU secured its first season opening victory since 2016.
Despite having opportunities, both squads were unable to get on the board at regulation. At the 94-minute mark, sophomore forward
Arianna Morgan (Oklahoma City) scored the match-winning goal off the goalie's deflection to propel Howard to victory.
Throughout the match, HU outshot Mount St. Mary's, 14-9, and had 10 corner kicks.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Alayah Hightower (Largo, Md.) led the way with four saves, including a pair of outstanding stops at the 40-minute mark.
Mount St. Mary's Charlotte Elrod posted a match-high five saves in a losing effort.
On Aug. 30, Coach
Brent Leiba's bunch concludes its two-match homestand with UNC Asheville. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
