Howard is Defeated by Coppin State in Doubleheader


BALTIMORE - Howard University softball fought hard against Coppin State but ultimately fell short in the doubleheader at the Coppin State University Softball Complex.

In game one, Camille Navarro opened the board up for the Bison when she singled to left field, allowing Kalita Dennis to advance to second and Jackie Jones to score. Coppin State responded during their turn with Cayla Brown singling up the middle to score Megan Narvaez.

Both teams stepped up defensively to keep the game locked at 1-1 until the seventh inning. A throwing error by the pitcher advanced Kamryn Tillman to third and ultimately scoring to give the Bison a 2-1 lead at the top of the seventh.

Down at the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles' Cloe Ochoa doubled to left center for a RBI bringing in Kylie Flagler. Tied 2-2, a third base field error allowed Soraya Valdez-Frick to reach first, Ochoa made it to third base and scored on a throwing error. Coppin State closed the inning with a 3-2 win.

Howard got off to an aggressive start in game two. Kalita Dennis began the first inning with a home run to left center. Xzarria Simmons came behind her to reach first on a fielding error by second base. Camille Navarro scored to give the Bison an early 2-0 lead.

Neither team closed the game in regulation. Going into extra innings, the Eagles came up big in the ninth inning. Brown's home run to center field with bases loaded resulted in four RBI. Coppin State ended with a 7-3 win over Howard.

Mackenzi Steele pitched 7 innings and Tracy Mosley pitched one. 

The Bison will finish the series against the Eagles on Monday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Howard softball returns on the road to Philadelphia, PA on Wednesday, April 24 to face Drexel University in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
