Howard Softball Shuts Out Coppin State In Pitching Duel

Box Score
BALTIMORE, MD- Howard Softball defeated Coppin State on the road, 2-0, on Monday, improving to a 5-5 record in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. Mackenzi Steele earned her eighth victory of the season, as she tossed seven shutout innings for the Bison.

The two teams remained scoreless through the first five innings of the ballgame before the Bison scored two runs in the sixth. With one out in the inning, Camille Navarro doubled to left-center. After stealing third, she came around to score as Xzarria Simmons reached base on an error. Pinch-running for Simmons, Noel Merritt stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Kamryn Tillman. Tillman was the only player with a multi-hit game, recording two of the five hits for Bison.

In the circle, Steele held the Eagles scoreless in her complete game shutout. She allowed just four hits and walked one while striking out six batters. She had not allowed a hit through her first three innings of work and threw just 79 pitches in her outing. "We are on a quest to make the conference tournament and I'm going to do that with  the ball in Mackenzi Steele's hands," said head coach Tori Tyson. "I think she put us on her back today and we needed that kind of outing."

On the other side, Madison Didion struck out 14 batters in her defeat. "The pitcher from Coppin State handled her business and she's gritty. All hats off to her, and we grinded out a run, and sometimes, that's what it's about," expressed Tyson. Both of the runs she allowed were unearned, as she tossed 117 pitches in seven innings. "I'm proud that we found a way to pull off the win," Tyson continued.

The Bison will resume MEAC play against Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday, April 23 at 3 p.m.
