WASHINGTON - Howard University Softball closed their series against the Morgan State Bears today. The Bison fell to the Bears, 8-4, at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
"Obviously this was an emotional loss because we were so close and we were there. You can't win games that you're typically not in and we are in every game right now," said head coach
Tori Tyson.
The Bears' Damashah Charles had an RBI left field with Damali Young scoring to put Morgan State on the board early in the first inning.
The Bison responded in the third inning with
Breanna Robinson hitting a home run to left field. With the homer,
Noel Merritt crossed the plate, giving the Bison a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Mikaela Browdy evened the score with a RBI that brought in Sarah Heagy for the Bears.
The bottom of the fifth brought a lot of excitement for the Bison.
Kalita Dennis doubled to left center for two RBIs that brought
Jackie Jones and
Sienna Herrera home. Up 4-2, the Bison were shut out for the remainder of the game.
Morgan's big seventh inning surge with four runs sealed their win.
The Bison totaled six hits in the game. On the mound,
Mackenzi Steele took the home loss, allowing seven runs.
The Bison honored its three seniors in the last home game of the season.
Alannah Baiyina,
Jasmine Gibson and Steele will graduate in May.
"I am so proud of our seniors," stated Tyson. "Alannah, I put her in a position that she has not played all year and she held it down. Mckenzi Steele gave us everything that she could and she put us in a position to win. They have laid the groundwork for what is the future of Howard softball."
Howard will finish its season on the road. The Bison will travel to Baltimore next weekend for a three-game series against Coppin State, April 19-20.
