Howard Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams Suffer a 6-1 Loss to Norfolk State


WASHINGTON - Howard University men's (1-10, 1-1 MEAC) and women's (3-11, 1-1 MEAC) tennis dropped its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game against Norfolk State men's (4-6, 1-0 MEAC) and women's (4-7, 3-0 MEAC) on Saturday.

Men's sophomore Roger Lyn won, 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match against top ranked Vini Da Silva. The win was the only point of the match for the Bison. 

The No. 1 doubles match with Flavian Fernandez and Agustin Carrizo were incomplete as Howard's Roger Lyn and Karim Shokeir led, 5-4.

On the women's team, Nicole Hutchison and Christina Joynes were defeated, 6-1, by Zoe Fraser and and Naz Kragoz. Following their doubles match, the Bison were vindicated at the No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 win by Dominique Jackson and Aria Ragas over Bruna Gongalces and Adriana Strode.

In the No. 2 doubles, Kendall Addison and Yassmine Khiri were met with a tiebreaker after splitting the first 12 points with Joyce Fields and Paula Fortunoa. The Spartans won the flight, 7-6, to come out on top, 9-7. Norfolk earned the doubles point.

Howard's only sixth court point came after Jackson defeated Adriana Strode, 6-0, 6-3.

At the No. 4 singles, Joynes lost the 6-4 tiebreaker to Fields.

Howard women's tennis will travel to Maryland Eastern Shore for their next game on April 2. First serve is 2 p.m. The men's team will have a week off before heading to Baltimore to face Morgan State on April 6 at 1 p.m.
