BALTIMORE – The Howard University men's and women's tennis teams played competitive matches against Loyola University Maryland on Wednesday. The Bison, however, came up short in both games in Baltimore, Maryland.
HOWARD MEN
The men's team (1-9, 1-0 MEAC) won in the No. 1 doubles match against Loyola (5-6, 2-2 Patriot League).
Roger Lyn and
Karim Shokeir took a 6-4 win over Skyler Gates and Matt Fitzmaurice.
In the singles matches, the Bison won the one, two and three spots.
Roger Lyn beat Brian Hoffarth, 6-2, 6-1.
Cole Gittens and Gates had a three-set bout with Gittens coming out on top, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Shokeir defeated Benny Glezer, 6-4, 6-3. Loyola's wins in sets four, five and six gave them the victory.
The hard fought contests ended with the Bison going down, 4-3.
HOWARD WOMEN
The Howard women's team (3-10, 1-0 MEAC) was blanked out, 7-0, by Loyola (8-2, 3-1 Patriot League).
In the doubles, freshman
Dominique Jackson and sophomore
Aria Ragas took a win in Wednesday's match. The duo defeated Loyola's Sandra Aguirre and Abby Decker, 6-3, at the No. 3.
Nicole Hutchison took her singles match to a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 tie-breaker but was unsuccessful in the third set. Hutchison's defeat came in the No. 2 against Abigail Thornton. Ultimately, Loyola swept the entire singles series.
The Bison will travel to Norfolk State on Saturday to face the Spartans at 1 p.m.
