WASHINGTON--Howard University softball earned wins number four and five on the season after a pair of victories against the South Carolina State Bulldogs on Monday. Playing at Nationals Academy in Washington, D.C., the Bison won Game 1 of the doubleheader 13-5, followed by a 15-2 victory in Game 2.
The Bison trailed early in the opener, allowing three runs in the top of the first inning. They cut the lead to 3-1 with an RBI double by
Camille Navarro to score
Kalita Dennis. In the second inning, the Bison capitalized with eight runs, capped off by a two-run home run by
Mackenzie Soper, her first round-tripper at the collegiate level. Howard scored all eight runs with two outs that inning, with eight consecutive Bison batters reaching base.
The Bison tacked on a run in the third inning, two runs in the fourth and a run in the final fifth frame. Navarro went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Soper,
Xzarria Simmons and
Sienna Herrera each added two hits for the Howard lineup.
In the circle, freshman Tracey Mosley earned the win, tossing four innings, allowing four runs and striking out three.
Howard softball head coach
Tori Tyson commented on her pitcher, saying, "I was particularly happy for Tracey Mosley who collected her first collegiate win. She has lost some tough games so early in her career, so she earned that win today."
Offense overload for the Bison carried over into Game 2, as they scored 15 runs on 14 hits. Howard jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs in both the first and third inning. The game turned into a rout as the Bison added nine runs in the fourth. Bulldog pitchers surrendered six walks that inning, including five consecutive base on balls.
Each of the first three batters in the Howard lineup scored two runs, including leadoff hitter
Kamryn Tillman, who had a three-hit performance. Navarro scored three runs at the cleanup spot in the lineup, while Herrera drove in three.
Mackenzi Steele earned the victory in the circle, pitching all five innings for the Bison, allowing just two runs and striking out five.
The Bison will play again at Nationals Academy on Wednesday, March 13, as they take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks for a doubleheader. Game times are set for noon and 2 p.m.
