WASHINGTON--Howard University softball hosted the Saint Peter's Peacocks for a doubleheader on Wednesday, splitting the two games. The Bison won the opener, 5-3, and lost the second game, 7-3.
"I am happy with the way we competed this entire week," said head coach
Tori Tyson.
The Peacocks jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs over the first two innings before the Bison bats woke up. RBI hits by the middle-of-the-order bats,
Kalita Dennis,
Camille Navarro and
Xzarria Simmons tied the game, 3-3, in the third inning.
The Bison took the lead in the fourth on a go-ahead RBI single by
Trinity Gibbs. They added a run of insurance as Dennis drove in another run later in the inning.
Bison pitcher
Tracy Mosley ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing the first two batters to reach base. "Tracy came in and a pitched a gem when we needed her to pick us up."
She retired the next three batters, leaving the inning unscathed. Mosley finished the game with a line score of seven innings pitched, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven.
Game two of the doubleheader could not elicit the same result for Howard softball. They jumped to an early 1-0 lead on an sacrifice fly by Simmons. The Peacocks answered with a run in the third and two runs in each of the final three innings of the game. Navarro and
Mackenzie Soper drove in runs for the Bison in the sixth inning but the offense was not enough to complete the sweep against Saint Peter's. "Offensively I thought we had a strong day, in game 2 we left a lot of runners on base which is something we can clean up this week," said Tyson.
The Bison will travel to the Maryland Eastern Shore next week for a three-game set against the Hawks. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23, with games set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The two teams will conclude on Sunday, March 24 with a game at 12 noon.
