LYNCHBURG, Va. (February 21, 2019) – Howard University men's swimming & diving team built momentum after Day Two of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships.
HU jumped a spot from seventh to sixth with two days remaining.
Seniors
Alexander Barnes (Rockledge, Fla.) and
Mark McCluskey (Hope, Maine), alongside sophomores
Kegan Ford (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and
William Speakman Smith II (Jacksonville, Fla.), competed in the men's 200 Free Relay where they nearly set a new school mark (1:22.83), missing the record by less than seventh-tenths of a second.
Individually, Barnes, Ford and Smith took part in the men's 50-yard Freestyle where they finished in the school's all-time top 10.
After registering the seventh-fastest mark in the prelims (21.13), Barnes followed up with a 21.06 time, giving him the sixth-best in school history. Ford produced the fifth-fastest in prelims (20.98), then posted the third-best time in program history (20.80). In the event, Smith placed 18
th overall, but had the 10
th-fastest mark in Bison history (21.26).
Seniors
Farion Cooper II (Nassau, Bahamas) and
Nicholas Haughton (Kingston, Jamaica) each delivered season-best in their respective events.
Cooper competed in the men's 200 IM where he clocked in at 1:57.24, the second-fastest in school history. Haughton registered a 4:49.88 in the 500 Free, which placed seventh all-time.
