@HUSwimming Opens Strong at the CCSA Championships

Bison display solid performances in relays

LYNCHBURG, Va. (February 20, 2019) – Howard University men's & women's swimming and diving squads opened strong at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships with solid efforts in the relay events.
 
Day one featured the 800 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay, alongside the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
 
For the men, seniors Nicholas Haughton (Kingston, Jamaica) and Mark McCluskey (Hope, Maine), junior Noah Nicholas (Atlanta) and sophomore William Speakman Smith II (Jacksonville, Fla.) competed in the 800-yard freestyle relay where they finished with a season-best (7:02.35), which is the fourth-fastest mark in program history.
 
In that same event, Smith opened as they team's first leg and recorded a 1:44.74 time, the best mark of any Bison this season in the 200 Free. For his efforts, he placed seventh on the all-time list.
 
Seniors Alexander Barnes (Rockledge, Fla.) and Farion Cooper II (Nassau, Bahamas), sophomore Kegan Ford (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and newcomer Miguel Davis, Jr. (Prince George's County, Md.) took part in the men's 200 medley relay where they posted the third-fastest time in program history with a season-best (1:33.79).
 
On the women's side, seniors KaSandra Kaplan (Detroit) and Latroya Pina (Seeknok, Mass.), junior Leanne McMaster (Kington, Jamaica) and freshman Madison Freeland (Glenside, Pa.) participated in the 800 Free relay and registered a season-best (7:55.27), which is the second-fastest in program history.
 
Additionally, Freeland tabbed the fourth-fastest mark in the 200 Free (1:56.96) after leading off for the Bison.
 
Junior Skylar Smith (Los Angeles) and freshmen DeAngela Fobbs (Upper Marlboro, Md.), India Jackson (Philadelphia) and Myka Thomas (Philadelphia) established the third-best time in program history in the women's 200 medley relay (1:48.94).
 
Currently, the men sit seventh overall while the women rank fourth.
