BALTIMORE (November 3, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team wrapped up the weekend with a five-set victory (21-25, 26-24, 27-25, 22-25, 15-12) over Coppin State (CSU) inside the Physical Education Complex Arena.
With the win, HU improved to 13-12 (10-1 MEAC) while the Eagles dropped to 11-15 (7-5 MEAC) on the season.
"Coppin [State] played aggressive and with more urgency than we did," said Howard women's volleyball head coach
Shaun Kupferberg after today's win. "We are at a crossroads right now and have a lot to figure out in the next two weeks."
Junior
Jurnee Tipton (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and freshman
Semira Blair (Fort Worth, Texas) led the Bison attack with a pair of double-doubles. Tipton produced 14 kills (team-high) and 10 digs while the Texas native added 33 assists (team-best) and 10 digs in the win.
Howard battled their way through sets two and three after dropping the opening game, winning both by two points.
CSU responded and forced a fifth and deciding set after taking game four, 22-25.
In game five, Howard took a three-point advantage after an Eagle attack error and pair of kills from sophomore
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas) and
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.). After a called timeout by the Eagles, HU extended its lead as much as five, thanks to a service ace by junior
Abby Morrow (Detroit), 13-8. CSU clawed their way back and sliced the margin down to two, 13-11, but a service error and kill by Tipton secured the Bison victory.
Williams recorded 11 kills while Wells added 10 kills and seven blocks. Defensively, third-year libero
Fola Wilson (Minneapolis) had a match-high 25 digs in the win.
For Coppin State, Paola Caten and Miajavon Coleman each registered double-doubles in the loss.
