Howard Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Bucknell

Bucknell ends HU’s three-game winning streak

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (November 27, 2019) – Howard University women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Bucknell, 60-70, at the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico.

With the setback, HU falls to 4-3 overall while BU improved to .500 (3-3) on the young season.

Senior guard Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points in the loss.

Howard took the slim advantage after one, 13-12, thanks to a layup by redshirt junior Jayla Myles (Rochester, N.Y.).

Bucknell opened the second period on a 12-5 run, capped off by a layup from Tessa Brugler, and held a six-point lead at the 5:22 mark, 18-24.

HU fought back and sliced the margin as low as one on multiple occasions. After a layup from senior Ayonna Williams (Washington) put Howard within one, 27-28, with less than two minutes before intermission, BU regained the momentum and closed the half on a 6-0 spurt, 27-34.

Bucknell extended its lead to double digits with under six minutes left in the third, 33-44, but HU clawed their way back into the contest. Despite closing the gap to six, 42-48, at the 3:28 mark, BU ended the third quarter with a 7-2 spurt and held a 11-point advantage after three, 44-55.

Howard cut the deficit down to single digits on several occasions but were unable to pull off the fourth quarter comeback.

Brugler led all scorers with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor.

After Thanksgiving (Nov. 29), HU faces Pac-12 foe Washington (UW) at noon (ET).

Friday's contest will be streaming live on FloHoops (PPV).
