Howard grabbed the upper hand early after an old-fashion three-point play from senior forward
Imani Bryant (Berkeley, Calif.), 6-3, but UW finished the first period a 12-3 run to take a six-point advantage after one, 9-15.
Midway through the second, Washington extended its lead to double digits after a layup from Kayla Rooks, 15-26, but back-to-back trey balls by Thornton and senior point guard
Ayonna Williams (Washington) sliced the margin down to single digits with more than four minutes left before intermission, 21-26.
After a brief timeout by the Huskies, UW regained the momentum and finished the half on an 11-3 spurt to take a double figures lead at the break, 24-37.
Sophomore forward
Krislyn Marsh (Duncanville, Texas) cut the deficit down to six after a fast break layup, 39-45, with less than five minutes remaining in the third, but the Huskies kept HU at bay and ballooned the margin back to double digits after three, 44-55.
Howard made one final run early in the fourth, dropping the deficit to seven, 48-55, but Washington withstood the Bison's late charge and ended the game on a 20-10 run, 58-75.
Bryant fell one point shy of recording a double-double, producing 10 rebounds and nine points. Senior guard
Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.) added eight dimes (game-high) and seven points in the loss.
Washington's Amber Melgoza led all scorers with 22 points while Darcy Rees notched a double-double (12 points and 10 boards) in the victory.
After more than a week away from the hardwood, HU returns to The District where Fairleigh Dickinson awaits. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium.
