TOLEDO, OHIO (November 17) – The Howard University Bison dropped game three of the Men Against Breast Cancer Invitational 112-68 on Sunday afternoon at John F. Savage Arena to the University of Toledo Rockets.
Â
"Toledo is a very good team, they are a team that will be playing in the NCAA tournament come March, all credit to them they did a wonderful job," said first-year head coach Kenny Blakeney. "I think we (Howard) took a step forward this game. We played hard for 40 minutes and that was something I really wanted us to do today. In terms of taking a step forward, growing and finding out who we can be in the future I think we did that today."
Â
Senior guard Charles "CJ" Williams (Richmond, Va.) recorded his second 20-point plus performance with a team-high 21 points on the afternoon. Freshman guard Ian Lee (Toronto, Canada) notched a career-high point, while sophomore guard Raymond Bethea, Jr. (Atlantic City, N.J.) pulled down a team-best seven boards.
Â
"It was great to get some major contributions from our younger guys. Lee played one of his better games and LiWayne Richardson (Boca Raton, Fla.) played well with energy and enthusiasm. Those are two guys that are going to be a big part of the team in the future that we are developing into college basketball student-athletes," said Blakeney. "And we are always led by our senior Williams, who played a solid game and did a great job on offense and defense. He has been the guy for us that helps to connect the dots between what we are trying to do and where we are trying to go."
Â
Howard commenced the contest with vigor knocking down four three-pointers within the first four minutes of play. On a long ball from Lee, HU tied the contest 9-9 at the 16:10 minute mark with Williams following up shortly after with a two-pointer for an 11-9 Howard lead.
Â
HU and UT went shot-for-shot up until the 12:39 mark, but a 13-2 run and heavy foul trouble by Howard laid the foundation for a 19-point Bison deficit at the half, 54-35.
Â
By the intermission, Howard tallied 16 team fouls compared to Toledo's three and had not seen any action from the charity stripe. In spite of the lopsided ratio, the Howard bench outscored UT 19-7.Â
Â
In the second half, HU managed to bring the deficit to 16 at the 14:54 mark on Lee's fourth made three of the game for a score of 63-47 before the Rockets sealed the win, 112-68.
Â
Five Toledo student-athletes scored in double figures with Marreon Jackson leading all scorers with 27 points, a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe and team-high nine assists.Â
Â
@HUMensBB will conclude the Men Against Breast Cancer Invitational with an 8 p.m. matchup in Huntington, W.V., against Marshall on Thursday, Nov. 21.
                Â
"We look forward to getting back to Washington, D.C., practicing and focusing on taking more steps forward," concluded Blakeney.
Â
The next home game: Saturday, Nov. 30 against Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
