WASHINGTON (October 8, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team moved to 5-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play after a 3-0 victory (28-26, 25-18, 25-23) over Morgan State (MSU) inside Burr Gymnasium.
HU recorded 12 total blocks, led by senior
Kira Porter (Lake Tahoe, Nev.) with a match-high eight blocks (two solo).
Howard jumped out to an early advantage and led as much as nine in the opening set, 18-9, but the Lady Bears stormed back. MSU took a 26-25 lead late, but a pair of kills by Porter and junior
Myca Mitchell (Clovis, Calif.) and a Morgan State hitting error put HU ahead after game one, 1-0.
In set two, a bad set from MSU's Roi Wallace forced Morgan State use a timeout midway through the game, 15-12. After the brief intermission, Howard kept the pressure on while eclipsing a .317 hitting percentage with 15 kills to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Morgan State grabbed a six-point advantage early in the third set, 6-12, but the Bison rallied and took a slight lead midway through after a kill from sophomore
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas), 15-14. MSU fought back and tied the game on multiple occasions, but Howard refused to relinquish the lead to win the set and match.
Freshman middle blocker
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) led the way with eight kills while fellow classmates
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) and
Semira Blair (Fort Worth, Texas) combined for 30 assists.
Defensively, juniors
Abby Morrow (Detroit) and
Jurnee Tipton (Ypsilanti, Mich.) had 13 digs apiece whereas third-year libero
Fola Wilson (Minneapolis) added 11 digs in the victory.
For Morgan State (8-10, 2-3 MEAC), Zoe McBride and Tylar Roberson produced a match-leading 12 kills each in the loss.
Sunday (Oct. 13), Howard wraps up the Homecoming festivities when Coppin State comes to town. Match-time is set for 1 p.m. inside The Burr.
