Howard's mistakes to much to overcome versus Harvard

Three Block punts doom Howard in the first half

Cambridge, Mass. -- Howard University's special team mistakes proved too costly, as the Bison drops a lopsided loss to the Harvard University Crimson 62-17 Saturday afternoon at the historic Harvard Stadium. 


 

Harvard's three-block performance in the first half was a mountain too high for Howard to overcome. The Crimson defense also forced two Bison fumbles. 


 

The bright spot in the first half was senior wideout Kyle Anthony four receptions for 118 yards which were a game-high.


 

True freshman quarterback Quinton Williams was under pressure all game, he managed a game-high 224-yards on 13-of-23 passing and a touchdown. He was sacked seven times. 


 

Howard was out-gained 455-277 total yards. 


 

The Bison's defense recorded an interception for the third straight game.


 

Quinton Hill recorded a game-high nine tackles as he paced the defense.


 

Howard falls to 1-5 in their final non-conference game. The Bison will continue their conference slate versus Norfolk State University for homecoming October 12 kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.


 

How it happens:


 

  • Howard started with a big quarterback keeper a gain of 13-yards 
  • A false start penalty and two negative play killed Howard's first drive
  • Harvard blocked the Bison punt to set up their first drive on the six-yard line
  • The Crimson scored on the next play, on a six-yard rushing touchdown
  • Howard held to a three-out on next drive
  • The Bison's defense came up big on a Rodney Dennard interception his second of the season; the drive started at the 50
  • Howard offensive line continued to struggle to commit another false start
  • QB Quinton Williams connected twice with Kyle Anthony on the drive to set the Bison up on the 20-yard line
  • Howard was not able to finish the drive settling for a Nick Farris 34-yard field goal, to cut the lead 7-3 with 4:11 left in the first quarter
  • The defense is starting to settle down forcing Harvard to a three-and-out
  • Howard ended the first quarter on the wrong end of a massive sack 
  • In the first quarter, Kyle Anthony led all receivers with 3 catches for 77 yards; Williams recorded 88-yards on 5-of-6 passing but was sacked three times
  • The Crimson punt team started the second quarter how the started the game, this time they scored a touchdown on a blocked punt to take a 14-3 lead with 14:53 remaining in the first-half
  • Anthony continues his big-play ability connecting on a 41-yard reception from Williams
  • Harvard defense stiffen holding Howard to no points 
  • The Crimson ensuing drive saw their passing game come alive connecting on their first two completions of the game
  • Harvard extended their lead 20-3 on a 1-yard rushing touchdown up the middle
  • The Crimson scored 34 points in the second quarter and added another 14 in the third quarter 
  • Howard scored their first touchdown of the game with 4:13 left in the third quarter on a one-handed catch by Michael Cornwell to cut the lead, 55-10

  • This is the first-ever matchup between the two historic campuses; Howard football was founded in 1893 - Harvard football was founded in 1873
  • This was the first time an HBCU played on Harvard campus
  • Howard athletics has played in five road games this season (1-4, 1-0 MEAC)
  • Kyle Anthony is 12 receptions from breaking the Howard career reception total
  • Boston has not been kind to Howard football; the last time HU was in Boston, the Bison dropped a 76-0 tilt to Boston College in 2015

  • Howard Athletics kicks off Homecoming Week Monday, Oct. 7 with Bison Madness: The Quad Edition. The event starts at 7 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium, doors open at 6:15 p.m. The first 500 students will receive a FREE ticket to the homecoming game versus Norfolk State Saturday, Oct. 12. Before the doors open, fans will have the opportunity to sign up for a chance to win $10,000, sponsored by Shorty Corleone.
