BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 4, 2019) – Second-year midfielder
Victoria Thornton (Plainfield, Ill.) delivered a match-winning goal to lift the Howard University women's soccer team over Texas Southern (TSU), 1-0, in an intense conference match at Sicard Hollow Park in Birmingham, Ala.
With the victory, Howard (6-2, 3-0 SWAC) remains perfect in league play while extending its conference winning streak to 11, dating back to September 2018.
"I'm very happy to get the result," said Howard women's soccer head coach
Brent Leiba. "We didn't play particularly well [and] credit to Texas Southern as I thought they played well. The silver lining is despite not playing to our standard, we still found a way to get the result."
Both squads went scoreless in the first half while taking only three shots total (Howard two and Texas Southern one). After intermission, both teams picked up the tempo and took five shots apiece.
At the 76-minute mark, Thornton scored her second goal of the season on TSU's Salma Ghazal and propelled HU to victory.
"Victoria [Thornton] was an absolute warrior tonight," said Leiba on his sophomore midfielder. "[She] was a major reason that we were able to get the result."
Sunday (Oct. 6), Howard wraps up the weekend with a talented Prairie View A&M squad. Kickoff is set for noon (ET)/11 a.m. (CT).
