BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 20, 2019) – Howard University women's soccer team tallied a season-high five goals in the win over Alcorn State (ASU) to remain undefeated in league play.
HU (11-2, 8-0 SWAC) controlled the tempo from start to finish, outshooting Alcorn State, 27-4.
"We dominated possession and created a lot of opportunities," said Howard women's soccer head coach
Brent Leiba, who is only three wins away from 100 career victories. "But [we] need to do a better job of finishing our chances. Overall, it's great to come away with two [winning] results from this weekend."
At the 31-minute mark, sophomore
Victoria Thornton (Plainfield, Ill.) put the Bison ahead, 1-0, thanks to an assist from fellow classmate
Kendall Macauly (Toronto, Canada).
Nearly 10 minutes later, third-year midfielder
Makaelah Murray (Stockton, Calif.) doubled HU's advantage before intermission, 2-0.
After halftime, the Braves' Paula Cabeza was fouled inside the box and granted a penalty kick where she capitalized and ended Howard's streak of seven consecutive shutouts, 2-1.
Junior
Elexa Pierson (Kansas City, Mo.) found sophomore
Thalia Boucher (Toronto, Canada) for her seventh goal of the year to extend Howard's lead, 3-1.
Roughly five minutes later, Macauly connected with Thornton for the second time on the day and expand the lead, 4-1.
"Victoria [Thornton] is such a special player," said Leiba on his second-year midfielder. "I'm glad that she was able to reward herself and [the] team with two fantastic goals today."
After another goal from Alcorn State's Cabeza, 4-2, junior forward
Aleeya Sawyer (Lincolnshire, Ill.) sealed the deal with an insurance goal with less than three minutes remaining, 5-2.
For ASU (0-13, 0-7 SWAC), Cabeza scored twice while goalkeeper Kali Helms racked up a match-best 15 saves in the loss.
Next weekend, Howard closes out its conference schedule with a pair of matchups in Alabama.
Friday (Oct. 25), HU takes on Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Ala. Match time is set for 4 p.m. (ET)/3 p.m. (CT).
Two days later (Oct. 27), the Bison wrap up league play against Alabama State. The action starts 2 p.m. (ET)/ 1 p.m. (CT) in Montgomery, Ala.
