Howard Volleyball Wins Opening Conference Game Against Morgan State

WASHINGTON (Sept. 29, 2018) - With an unveiling of their 2017 Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Championship banner on Organization Night, the Howard University volleyball team (8-9,1-0) defeated Morgan State (8-9, 0-1)  in its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game of the season.  The Bison ended the Bears' three-game winning streak.

"We played well tonight against a tough Morgan State team.  They posed some unique problems for us defensively and I thought we took a while to figure out how to adjust.  Our offense is still growing and developing, but I liked the progress we saw tonight."

The first set was a fairly even match between the two teams. Howard had 14 kills to Morgan's 12. The game remained close throughout with the Bison winning the set, 25-22.

The Bears responded in the second set, holding the Bison to -.029. The Bears took the set, 25-15.

The Bison answered in the third set. On the attack it proved to be their best set for the night, at .579.  Howard had 13 kills, 19 attempts and two errors.

In the fourth and what would be the final set, the Bison were .222 on the attack. The Bears were .061. Howard prevailed over Morgan to end the game with a set score of 25-20.

Jurnee tipton had 14 kills and six digs. Kira Porter recorded 10 kills, two aces, a block and an assist. Indira Dandridge totaled eight kills and a block. Freshman Kailyn Williams added eight kills and a block. Courtney Dalton had six kills and a block. Tamia Dockery posted 38 assists and 11 digs. Fola Wilson tallied 19 digs and three assists. There were eight aces by the Bison. Jurnee Farrell served four aces. Abby Morrow contributed two.

In addition to hosting Organization Night and displaying the 2017 MEAC banner, the Bison's Kira Porter held a food drive in honor of her deceased friend, Asa O'Neal. Asa died from Crohn's Disease complications in 2016. 

The Bison will host its next game at home on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. against Coppin State University in Burr Gym.
