Howard Volleyball Sweeps UMBC in Second Home Win of the Season

Bison Sweep Retrievers, 3-0

WASHINGTON (September 18, 2018) --- The Howard University volleyball team captured a 3-0 sweep over University of Maryland Baltimore County Tuesday evening.

The Bison defeated the Retrievers in three sets with scores of 27-25, 25-22 and 26-24 to pick up Howard's second home game win of the season.

"We didn't play well tonight, but found a way to get the win. Our defense was solid but our offense needs to be better if we are going to achieve our goals," stated head coach Shaun Kupferberg. On the attack the Retrievers held the Bison to just .086 percent.

In the first set HU led by as much as seven points at 15-22 before allowing UMBC to come back and tie at 24-24. The Bison held out and came away with the set, 27-25.

Set two saw both teams with lead changes. The set remained close throughout play but the Bison once again pulled away, taking it 25-22.

The Retrievers worked in the third set to keep the game alive but were unsuccessful in their attempt. The Bison captured the set, 26-24.

Junior Kira Porter led the team with 15 kills, two blocks and an ace. Senior setter Tamia Dockery recorded 28 assists, 10 digs and four kills. Middle blocker Olubunmi Okunade returned after being out on injury. She tallied four kills, five blocks and two digs. Sophomore libero Fola Wilson had 17 digs and two assists.
