BALTIMORE (September 19, 2018) – For the third consecutive match, Coach
Phillip Gyau and the Howard University Men's Soccer team erased an early deficit and finished its three-match road swing with a 2-2 draw at UMBC.
The duo of senior
Victor Guirma (New Paltz, N.Y.) and junior
Andres Gomez (Silver Spring, Md.) led the comeback, each registering a goal in the tie.
Trailing, 1-0, after intermission, HU found themselves in a deeper hole as UMBC's James Gielen scored at the 58-minute mark and gave the Retrievers a 2-0 advantage.
Within the next five minutes, Guirma assisted Gomez with his third goal of the season and cut the margin down to one, 2-1.
At the 67-minute mark, Guirma scored his fourth goal on the year and tied the contest at two apiece.
From that point on, both squads were unable to break the tie after regulation despite having opportunities. A pair of 10-minute overtime periods were not enough to decide a winner either.
Junior goalkeeper
Carlos Caro (Silver Spring, Md.) stopped a season-high eight shots in the draw.
Howard begins a three-match home stand, starting Saturday (Sept. 22) when Robert Morris comes to town. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
Also, Saturday's promotion is Community Day where Coach Gyau and the Bison welcome members of the community to the match. Entry is FREE and all are welcome.
