WASHINGTON (September 17, 2018) --- Howard's dynamic ball movement and defensive stronghold did not outlast Navy's ferocity in Monday's 3-2 overtime loss in Greene Stadium.
After the Navy scored at the 18 minute mark in the first half, Howard remained scoreless until a late foul by the Mids gave them an opportunity to make a play. A penalty kick in the 43rd minute gave Kendall Hamilton the opportunity to put Howard on the board. Hamilton succeeded in taking the game to 1-1. Junior Alayah Hightower was impressive defensively. Her 10 saves in the first half kept the Bison within distance of the Midshipmen. The Mids outshot the Bison 15-5.
The Bison used the momentum from that late goal to pick up the pace in the second half. Makela Davidson kicked a high shot goal over the goalkeeper's head at 57:40 to put the Bison up 2-1. The Midshipmen led the Bison in corner kicks 14-2. Howard's Hightower recorded a season high 12 saves in a series of highly-contested plays.
Refusing to be outdone, the Mids stayed on the Bison's heels. In the 88th minute Navy's Tori Mitchell took advantage of a wild deflection that brought the score to 2-2. The Bison could not respond before the end of regulation. Navy's Baseley McClaskey put away the Bison in overtime with a game-winning goal at 3:07.
The Bison continue game play on the road this weekend as they begin conference play in Texas. They return home to host Grambling State University on September 28 at 7 p.m. in Greene Stadium.
