WASHINGTON (August 24, 2018) – Coach
Phillip Gyau and the Howard University Men's Soccer team opened its 2018 campaign in style with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs at Greene Stadium. HU picked up its first season opening victory in seven years.
"This is only the beginning," said Gyau after today's victory. "We're looking forward to good things this season, but again, this is only the beginning. HU [Howard] is rising."
Howard outshot the Bulldogs, 10-8, with senior
Victor Guirma (New Paltz, N.Y.) and junior
Andres Gomez (Silver Springs, Md.) each registering a goal in the victory.
Despite a scoreless first half, HU picked up the intense and built momentum going into intermission once reserves entered the contest.
After the break, Bryant's Antonio Terceros put the Bulldogs ahead, thanks to a long cross pass from George Gill, 1-0.
Moments later, Gomez was foul inside the box and capitalized on a penalty kick to draw the match even, 1-1.
With time dwindling, Guirma delivered the go-ahead goal at the 80-minute mark and gave the Bison their first season opening victory, dating back to 2011.
Defensively, junior
Carlos Caro earned three saves in the win.
On Aug. 28, Howard travels to the City of Brotherly Love where La Salle awaits. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
